The answer for this would be a TOKEN. A token could be of any kind as this serves as an award for something that they have achieved such as making their beds every morning for those adults who are having intellectual disability. This is called the Token economy.
To be fair, therapists don’t often hate their clients. For starters, we chose to enter the helping profession because we want to facilitate positive change in people’s lives. We choose this field because we’ve been there ourselves, or we have a strong desire to understand the human condition and lend a hand, or both.
Most therapists will ask clients if hugs or other touch, even something as small as a pat on the shoulder, would help or upset them. My middle-aged therapist does allow me to hug her; and I have — several times.
The toughest part of being a therapist is being truly “present” with the patient. The demands placed on a therapist in a typical day of psychotherapy are truly extraordinary. The therapist must be present in a way that allows the patient to feel heard, validated, and understood.
Feelings like anger or sadness that have been buried for a long time have finally made an appearance. Another breakthrough can be realizing self-destructive patterns like getting involved with people who are bad for you or substance abuse.
