Eating maggots or maggot-infested food can cause bacterial poisoning. Most foods that have maggots aren’t safe to eat, especially if the larvae have been in contact with feces. Some houseflies use animal and human feces as breeding sites. They also breed on garbage or rotting organic material.
Intestinal myiasis occurs when fly eggs or larvae previously deposited in food are ingested and survive in the gastrointestinal tract. Some infested patients have been asymptomatic; others have had abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea (2,3). Many fly species are capable of producing intestinal myiasis.
Although they are quiet invaders, maggots should be dealt with quickly. Some of the dangers of maggots include fly infestations and animal sickness if you have pets. If they get into any food meant for human consumption, they can cause bacterial poisoning.
Maggots moult twice during their development and can grow from 2 mm to 20 mm in length in four days.
House fly eggs look like small grains of rice. Eggs hatch within 24 hours, and house fly larvae emerge. House fly larvae, or maggots, appear similar to pale worms. When entering the pupal stage, white larvae develop hard, dark outer shells.
Maggots don’t just show up out of nowhere; they show up for a reason. Flies become attracted to some rotting material or spoiled food in your home and use that as a breeding ground to lay their eggs which hatch to become maggots.
Maggots have a conical body form (i.e. extending to a point). These are actually the spiracles (breathing holes) for the maggot and enable the maggot to breathe whilst burrowing down into whatever it is feeding on. At the anterior end are the maggot’s mouthparts and these are often hook-like.
