Located in the crater of an extinct volcano, Mexico City is about 2,240 metres above sea level. The lower atmospheric oxygen levels at this altitude cause incomplete fuel combustion in engines and higher emissions of carbon monoxide and other compounds. Intense sunlight turns these into higher than normal smog levels.
Mexico City’s most important air pollutants are ozone (O3), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrocarbons (HC), and carbon monoxide (CO). Much of this pollution comes from gas exhaust from private vehicles.
Air Pollution in Mexico City has been a concerning issue to all pop people and members of the health departments for some time. This is perhaps due to Mexico City’s high altitude (7382 ft above sea level), its oxygen levels are 25% lower and fuels do not combust completely.
Low-emission public transit: The city has expanded public transit options to include low- and zero-emissions options like the Metrobús and Ecobici bicycles. Early changes that revolutionized air quality in CDMX were part of a multiphase government program called ProAire.
Mexico City, Guadalajara and Ciudad Juarez are the most polluted, with Mexico City’s air quality being among the worst in the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Mexico City’s air averages 179 mg per cubic meter of suspended particulates, well above the WHO 90 mg maximum recommendation.
Air quality in the database is represented by the annual mean concentration of particulate matter (PM10 and PM2. 5, i.e. particles smaller than 10 or 2.5 micrometers, respectively)….List of most-polluted cities by particulate matter concentration.

The bulk of emissions in North America come from human activity; volcanoes represent about 30 percent of the total emissions. Major sulfur dioxide sources in Mexico include several power plants in western Mexico, oil infrastructure in and along the Bay of Campeche, and active volcanoes.
