DTS-HD Master Audio (DTS-HD MA; known as DTS++ before 2004) is a multi-channel, lossless audio codec developed by DTS as an extension of the lossy DTS Coherent Acoustics codec (DTS CA; usually itself referred to as just DTS).
Unlike most audio formats, Dolby® TrueHD is 100 percent lossless. This means that what you hear is bit-for-bit identical to the master recording.
Dolby Digital Plus is the “lossy” version. Instead of using matrixing, it applies lossy compression to all of the discrete audio channels, which helps to take up less space on a Blu-ray disc. Dolby TrueHD, on the other hand, is lossless. DTS-HD is a lossy 7.1 surround format, whereas DTS-Master HD is lossless.
Blu-ray Disc
For most of the Blu-ray and 4K Blur-ray discs, the sound comes in lossless TrueHD source. When it comes to Atmos, all of the streaming services such as Vudu, iTunes, Netflix and Amazon delivers Atmos in lossy Dolby Digital Plus. For Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray Discs, it comes in TrueHD.
Dolby TrueHD is Dolby’s “lossless” channel based format. Amtos is Dolby’s “Object based” surround sound format, which is also lossless. If you play Atmos on a system that can decode and play TrueHD but not Atmos, you should get TrueHD.
The bare minimum for Dolby Atmos is a 5.1. 2 system. This means you have five speakers around the room, one subwoofer, and two height speakers. If you currently have a 7.1 system, you can just take two of those surround speakers and mount them to the ceiling.
Dolby Atmos is worth it when gaming. Whether on a gaming system or through a VR system, Dolby Atmos is a top of the line option for those who want to immerse themselves in the game.
When it comes to audio, Netflix slightly one-ups Amazon Prime Video by offering up to Dolby 7.1 surround sound on select content.
The process for changing the audio and subtitle language is similar on the Netflix app for iPhone, iPad, or Android. Simply begin playing the show or film in the Netflix app, and then tap the screen to see the playback options. Tap “Audio and Subtitles” to access the languages that are available.
