The most common food grade stainless steel is Type 304. 304 grade stainless steel is so popular in the food industry because of its resistance to oxidization and corrosion. The chromium protects the product from oxidization or rust, whereas the nickel content rescues the food grade drum from corrosion.
Type 301 Stainless Steel exhibits corrosion resistance comparable to Types 302 and 304 in most mild service conditions. Resistance to food service requirements and atmospheric corrosion is excellent.
440C stainless steel
The safest type of reusable water bottle to drink from is a high-quality stainless steel water bottle. Stainless steel is a non-toxic material that doesn’t need a liner. Austenitic stainless steels such as 304 or 316 have high amounts of nickel and chromium. The chromium combines with the oxygen before the iron is able to which forms a chromium oxide layer. This layer is very corrosion resistant which prevents rust formation and protects the underlying metal.
To distinguish the molybdenum-containing alloys, a chemical reagent is then used on the yellow stain. If the color changes from yellow to pink, we are in the presence of a stainless steel containing molybdenum (AISI 316).
Due to this, Albany County Fasteners recommends never using aluminum and stainless steel together. We also recommend using metals exclusively for maximum life. Stainless with stainless, aluminum with aluminum, brass with brass.
The 400 series is susceptible to rust and corrosion under some conditions. Heat-treating will harden the 400 series. The 400 series of stainless steels have higher carbon content, giving it a martensitic crystalline structure. Martensitic stainless steels aren’t as corrosion resistant as the austenitic types.
