The United States Government does not refund sales tax to foreign visitors. Sales tax charged in the U.S. is paid to individual states, not the Federal government – the same way that VAT is paid in many countries.
Americans pay between 2.9% and 7.25% of the price of the goods they buy in the majority of states. A few states, however, levy no sales tax whatsoever. On average, across all states, sales taxes actually account for a larger share of total revenue than either property or individual income tax.
But generally speaking, there is no sales tax refund for the items you buy from a vendor. There’s an exception if you are exporting the items outside of the U.S. In the U.S., a sales tax is imposed every time there’s a transfer of title or possession.
Requirements to get Tax Refund in USA as Tourist or Resident
Tax -free shopping is available for clothing priced at less than $100 per item, personal computers and computer peripheral devices of up to $1,500 and school supplies of up to $50. Purchases of up to $150 for graphing calculators and $350 for computer software are also exempt from sales tax.
