A nice, sensible, not-over-the-top 2,500 square foot home, might cost $275 – $300 per square foot or $687,500- $750,000 to build.
There are three surefire ways to waterproof your wood for years to come.
Apply a coat of oil to the surface of the wood using a lint-free cloth, such as an old cotton T-shirt. Pour the oil into the cloth and rub the cloth along the grain of the wood until the entire surface has been covered, wiping away any puddles that form.
“Wood is fine in bathrooms. You just have to dry water off of it rather than letting it sit, but you should do that anyway,” explains Sassaman. “Putting extra coats of varnish on it will also help make it more durable.”
Softwoods like cedar, pine, and Douglas fir are also wonderful options for a bathroom, especially as siding and ceilings.
The most common use for both tongue and groove and shiplap is to panel entire walls, particularly in the kitchen or bathroom. But you can also use both styles to create just one accent wall, or even as a backsplash or fireplace surround.
Give the entire vanity top a good sanding. Use a 100-150 grit sandpaper for the final sanding to make the surface ready to receive the Waterlox sealer. After sanding, make sure to clean off the surface of your wood so you have no lingering dust. I start with a good vacuuming, then use a microfiber cloth.
Stain the butcher block using a stain that goes with your vanity and overall design of your bathroom. If you get a stain that seals while it’s applied, it will save you time. Apply 2-3 coats of polyurethane in semi gloss. Stain and seal outside of your house.
The quickest way to waterproof a bathroom vanity is by using a water-resistant finish on to the surface of the cabinet. These can be bought at all good home improvement stores, but you will need to prepare the cabinet before applying the water-resistant finish.
