UPDATE – 5 December 2018 The 28 September 2018 magnitude 7.5 Palu, Indonesia earthquake (0.178°S, 119.840°E, depth 13 km) occurred at 1002 UTC. The major earthquake triggered catastrophic liquefaction, landslides, and a near-field tsunami that resulted in direct damage, impact, economic loss, and loss of life.

The reality of a tsunami hitting NYC is pretty slim, mostly because (for reasons you can read about here) the Atlantic is not prone to earthquakes. Short version: If there is a tsunami coming get on a tall roof somewhere, presuming whatever earthquake initiated the tsunami didn’t flatten New York first.
There would be a lot of damage, and small buildings would be destroyed, but the larger buildings would survive. Look at other areas hit by tsunamis. The buildings that are gone were all light framed construction. Heavy steel, concrete and masonry remains.

The danger of a tsunami in Puerto Rico is real. Since 1867, two tsunamis have affected their coastal region, causing death and destruction in 1867 and 1918. There is the tsunami threat in other parts of the Caribbean according to the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC).

To the north part of the island, the North America plate is moving past and sinking below Puerto Rico, while in the southern region, the Caribbean plate is sinking into the mantel underneath the island. “Essentially, the island is being squeezed between these two tectonic plates,” he said.
Because of its high population density and extensive development near the coast, Puerto Rico has a significant risk for earthquakes and tsunamis.

The 2021 Los Angeles Mega-Tsunami was the worst natural disaster in the history of the United States. Triggered by a massive unknown underwater volcano near Hawaii, the tsunami was eighty feet in height upon making landfall in southwestern California on April 1, 2021.
