While drum brakes do have a completely different layout and mode of operation than disc brakes do, they are usually no more difficult to service, and often require only a basic set of hand tools and a drum brake adjustment tool to get the job done.

While drum brakes are quite different than disc brakes, they operate using the same principle. Just like with disc brakes, if there is air in the lines, the brake pedal will feel spongy. In order to bleed drum brakes you will need some fresh brake fluid and a helper.
There are three types of drum brakes depending on how the brake shoes are pressed on to the drums; leading/trailing shoe type, twin leading shoe type and duo-servo type.
Twin leading shoe type drum brake This type of drum brake has two wheel cylinders and two leading shoes. Each wheel cylinder presses on one shoe, so that both shoes act as leading ones when the vehicle moves forward, providing superior braking force.
Disadvantages of Drum Brake system: Low braking force compared to Discs. Brakes ‘fade’ when the driver applies them for a prolonged time. The brake shoe lining made of asbestos is harmful to humans. When wet, the braking grip reduces considerably.
Drum brake disadvantages Excessive heating can happen due to heavy braking, which then can cause the drum to distort, and thus cause vibration under braking. Under hard braking, the diameter of the drum increases slightly due to thermal expansion, the driver must press the brake pedal farther.

Drum brakes lock-up the wheels easier and make better parking brakes than disc brakes. Those who enjoy doing handbrake turns may also favour rear drum brakes since they lock-up easier (self-energizing). Drum brakes are also smaller and lighter but these are not reasons why modern cars still use them.
Though disc brakes rely on the same basic principles to slow a vehicle (friction and heat), their design is far superior to that of drum brakes. Instead of housing the major components within a metal drum, disc brakes use a slim rotor and small caliper to halt wheel movement.

Discs brakes can be dangerous – Problems can arise when riders in a group are using a mix of disc and rim braking systems, meaning that some are able to brake with different effectiveness than others. Disc brakes offer greater stopping power, which can be helpful on long descents. Disc brakes allow for more precise braking, making wheel lockup less likely. Disc brakes work better than rim brakes in wet weather. Changing rotor sizes allows you to adjust how much braking power you want.
Look at any brand’s 2021 lineup of road bikes, and you’ll notice one common trend: They all have disc brakes. This shouldn’t come as a surprise. After all, rim brake–equipped road bikes have been fading from existence since 2011, when disc brakes first appeared on road bikes.
