Habitat & Diet The Arctic Fox is Iceland’s only terrestrial mammal, meaning it is the only native mammal to the country. The Arctic Fox is thought to have come to Iceland by its own means at the end of the last Ice Age, trotting across the frozen sea from mainland Scandinavia and Greenland.
The arctic fox’s diet consists of birds, eggs, small mammals and fish. It will also eat berries, seaweed, insects and larvae when other prey is scarce. The arctic fox also feeds on lemmings -one of its favorite foods- and voles, among other creatures.
Though fur hunting has decreased, many arctic foxes still reside on fur farms. Arctic foxes are not only hunted for their fur. Indigenous groups sometimes even consider arctic foxes to be game animals, using their meat in food preparation.
Threats. The scarcity of prey is the most prevalent threat for the Arctic fox. Disease and genetic pollution of the species by foxes bred in captivity also threatens this species.
Arctic foxes have multilayered fur to insulate their bodies against the icy wind. The fur changes to white in the winter to help keep them safe from predators. They have round bodies with short legs, muzzles, and ears, ensuring a low surface area to volume ratio to minimize heat loss.
This, of course, happens with wild mammals too, such as foxes, badgers and squirrels and the extra fur helps them to keep their body temperature constant during very cold weather. Smaller mammals lose heat more quickly than larger ones and so they must burn up their fat fast to keep warm.
They have adapted to match the colors of the earth around them. In the winter months, they turn white. Some foxes will change colors when they molt with different growth cycles. When they are young they are a brown or gray color, later they take on the color of their species.
Unlike other ultra-rare pets, the Artic Fox is not worth a legendary pet for it.
